Thousands of churches in the UK are at risk of closure over the next five years due to financial strain, location, and denominational pressures, according to a recent study.

The National Churches Trust survey found that up to 2,000 churches could shut down by 2030, with rural areas and certain denominations being more vulnerable.

The study, which included responses from 3,600 churches across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, revealed that 5% of churches are uncertain about their future, translating to around one in every 20 churches facing possible closure.

Rural churches are more at risk, with 7% of respondents from countryside areas expecting to shut down.

Methodists are the most uncertain, with 12% of congregations doubting their survival beyond 2030.

The condition and frequency of use of church buildings are major concerns, with smaller churches struggling to host regular services and community events.

The survey shows the challenges faced by churches in the UK, including declining attendance, reduced funding, and a growing repair bill.

The National Churches Trust is calling for increased support for churches, particularly in rural areas and for smaller congregations.
